Canvas of Hope: How Africa’s Youth are Painting the “Africa We Want” Through Art and Adventure

In a world filled with possibilities, Africa’s youth are emerging as a powerful force for change. As the continent’s demography evolves, there is an increasing need to empower its young citizens to actively participate in shaping their future.
The journey to achieving this transformation begins with initiatives that foster creativity, unity, and a deep connection to Africa’s vision for the future, encapsulated in the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Two remarkable initiatives featured in this edition are leading this charge: The Great African Art Banner (GAAB) and The Africa Day Kilimanjaro Challenge.
1. The Great African Art Banner (GAAB) Initiative
The GAAB Initiative is a colossal effort seeking to harness the power of visual artists and innovative thinkers across the continent. Its goal? To inspire and promote a solution-based approach to youth participation in national and continental development.

National Endorsement: Fully endorsed by the Minister of State for Gender and Culture Affairs of Uganda, the initiative serves as a symbol of Uganda’s dedication to the dreams of its people.

Continental Recognition: Stretching far beyond borders, the African Union Commission has recognized GAAB’s extraordinary potential to unite diverse cultures, ideas, and dreams.

The Goal: Through the GAAB-Paint the Africa We Want Campaign, individual 1km national banners will eventually be woven into a monumental 56km Great African Art Banner representing the collective heartbeat of millions.
“Art serves as a universal language that transcends borders and languages. It enables Africa’s youth to articulate their dreams, concerns, and aspirations for a united and prosperous continent.”
2. The Africa Day Kilimanjaro Challenge
As we celebrate the legacy of the African Union (formerly the OAU), youth are also taking to the paths of Afro-tourism and exploration.
The Africa Day Kilimanjaro Challenge is an annual expedition managed by Origin Trails & Tours and AfrikaSpeaks (Zimbabwe), spearheading the Live Your Dream Africa initiative.
Reaching New Summits
In May 2023, climbers from five different African nations scaled Africa’s highest mountain to reach Uhuru (Freedom) Peak on Africa Day (May 25th). In a powerful, symbolic act, they carried a Mock Art Banner to the summit—proving literally and figuratively that Africa’s dreams are limitless.
A United Vision for Agenda 2063
These initiatives have already brought together passionate citizens from across the continent, including:

Rwanda, Congo, and Sudan
By promoting innovative projects, collaborative unity, and solution-guided creativity, these movements are fostering a generation that isn’t just dreaming of a brighter tomorrow—they are actively building it.
